The $5.11 Million Wembanyama: The Most Expensive Non-Auto NBA Card Ever Sold

May 29, 2026 5 min read

On May 26, 2026, a 2023-24 Panini Prizm Black 1-of-1 Victor Wembanyama rookie card, graded PSA 10, changed hands for $5.11 million in a private sale brokered by Fanatics Collect. The company confirmed the figure to ESPN. It is now the most expensive known sale of a non-autographed NBA card, the fourth-highest publicly recorded NBA card sale of all time, and a record for any Wembanyama card by a wide margin.

The jump is staggering. The previous high for a Wemby card was $860,100, set at a Goldin auction in February 2025 for a different 1-of-1 parallel from the same Prizm set. In roughly fifteen months the ceiling moved nearly six times higher.

Why no autograph?

Collectors sometimes ask why the most valuable Wembanyama card isn't an autograph. There are no licensed Wembanyama autographed rookie cards. He signs exclusively with Fanatics, which took over the NBA's trading-card license in October, while Panini held the license during his rookie season. That structural quirk is part of why an unsigned 1-of-1 parallel carries the crown.

What's driving the market

The card itself is visually plain — Wembanyama dribbling against a black backdrop. The value is about the player, not the artwork. In his third NBA season he posted career highs, was named Defensive Player of the Year, and finished near the top of MVP voting. When a generational player keeps clearing expectations, the rarest single copies of his rookie cards become trophy assets, and buyers price in the upside.

What it means for graded collecting

This sale is a reminder that at the very top of the hobby, condition and scarcity compound. A 1-of-1 in a PSA 10 holder is the intersection of "only one exists" and "the best possible grade of that one." For the rest of us, it underscores why the grade on the slab — and the cert label that proves it — is the whole ballgame on a high-end card.
